NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man accused of sexually assaulting multiple victims in a four-day span said he has “never” sexually assaulted anybody.
Phillip Graham, 27, made the comments during an interview Monday at Norfolk’s City Jail, where he is being held without bond.
He’s facing two counts of forcible sodomy, two counts of robbery: serious bodily injury, two charges of abduction with intent to defile, brandishing a firearm, simple assault and six counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
In neighboring Virginia Beach, Graham has been charged with forcible sodomy, two counts of abduction, two counts of robbery using a firearm and three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
While Graham wouldn’t comment on specific allegations, saying he’d like “to leave mostly those to my lawyer” he did say the full story isn’t being told.
“I do feel like they’re hyper-focused on negativity when I do a whole lot of positive things for this community,” Graham said. “Like, I’m a mentor, I’m a boxing coach. My entire community is willing to speak about it, more than likely, and tell you that this is not my character.”
Graham said he came to Norfolk from Willow Spring, N.C., with the Navy. He said he served three years before leaving due to “physical and mental issues.” The U.S. Navy has yet to confirm his service.
He said he gets disability checks and works as a “life coach” with his own business. He has no prior criminal record.
However, he said his mental health problems have persisted and said he is “bipolar.”
“For the most part, I’m decently on my meds, but I would say I was having a mental crisis over the last few weeks,” Graham said. “I’ve been really rethinking the world, you know what I’m saying? Just looking at, you know, so many bad people get out and released every day, and then so many good people sometimes don’t even get the voice to not, you know what I’m saying, to get their own freedom. You know, sometimes we lock up the wrong ones.”
He said he didn’t want to get into all the details but said “there are some things that’s fabricated in this story” and said the allegations against him are not true.
“I’m just hoping that if the justice system actually works,” he said, “that it will get to the bottom of this and then show and prove that I’m innocent.”
