Local residents share money-saving grocery tips amid SNAP benefits uncertainty

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The government shutdown has come with some major interruptions, and perhaps one of the biggest could come in the form of SNAP benefits possibly being halted by the end of the week.

The uncertainty has Hampton Roads residents trying to shop smart and stretch their dollars as far as they can.

“Get what you can,” said Virginia Beach resident Laurie Mullen Parker. “Every dollar counts.”

That’s what shoppers told us after learning SNAP benefits, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, will run out soon.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture posted on its website that “the well has run dry, [and] at this time there will be no benefits issued November 01.” Shoppers around Hampton Roads are using the time to get the items they need while trying to save.

“Me personally, I like to go along with places that offer discounts like Food Lion,” said Norfolk resident Deece Mullen. “They have MVP, good deals like two for $4, two for $5.”

Portsmouth resident Amanda Hardin said that “if you’re going to Kroger, you have there 12 packs that are three for $13. Then you also have side items, mac and cheese, pastas, everything like that.”

They say paying attention to store advertisements and price trends could help anyone save a few dollars at the grocery store.

“If you’re going to get meats, I recommend going to Walmart and getting them in bulk, so get that big pack of hamburger meat for $40 and cut it into a pound at time,” Hardin said.

Shopping at smaller stores could be helpful too.

“I say Dollar Tree because Dollar Tree has expanded their choices now with produce,” Mullen said, adding, “I’m here at the Family Dollar. I get my milk, bread, water, and I’m spending, I’d say, no more than $15.”

And while tips to save are plentiful, everyone still hopes for a resolution soon before the government shutdown becomes dire.

“I really want it to open because it messes with your pay,” Hardin said. “However, it looks like there’s no end in sight until they get together and come to an agreement.”
