Family of missing Naval Station Norfolk sailor releases statement after body found in Broad Creek

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A body was found in a wooded area in Norfolk near the Broad Creek neighborhood Monday, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) confirmed.

According to NCIS, the Norfolk Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy and working to positively identify the victim.

The Norfolk Police Department was assisting NCIS on the scene.

NCIS has also been investigating the disappearance of Culinary Specialist Seaman Angelina Resendiz, who was last seen in her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk on May 29.

Following the discovery of the body, the Resendiz family released a statement:

A community activist in contact with Resendiz’s mother Esmerelda Castle said that Castle is now back in Texas.

“She is very distraught,” Michael Muhummad said. “But, she’s really reserved and resolved in bringing her daughter home whatever way that comes. But her more important focus is justice. She is very determined towards justice, as is friends and family of this beautiful soul Ms. Angelina.”

No arrests have been made at this time and no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation is still ongoing.
