JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — The Williamsburg-James City County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of a scam call where the caller impersonates a deputy sheriff.

The sheriff’s office says several citizens received a call from someone pretending to be a deputy sheriff with the Williamsburg-James City County Sheriff’s Office and said the victims had missed jury duty or have an outstanding federal warrant.

The scammer then attempts to obtain money, the sheriff’s office said.

According to deputies, the scammer threatens to come get the victims if they hang up.

The Williamsburg-James City County Sheriff’s Office will never call about outstanding warrants or attempt to get money through gift cards.
