JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police were called to the scene of a fatal crash in James City County Tuesday morning.
According to State Police, the crash occurred around 7:22 a.m. in the eastbound lanes on I-64 at mile marker 227.
The crash involved a 2015 Chevrolet Express Van driven by 31-year-old Humberto Vara-Luna, of Arlington. According to investigators, the driver lost control, lost control, and caused the vehicle to roll several times.
Vara-Luna survived the crash, but has serious injuries. He was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center. His front seat passenger, 30-year-old Wlber Escobar-Orellana, suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown from the scene to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
His back seat passenger, 30-year-old Sara Maria Diaz-Nieto succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Police charged Vara-Luna with reckless driving and driving while revoked. Other charges are pending.
