(WAVY) — Hampton Roads Transit announced they are extending the OnDemand Ridesharing service in Newport News and Virginia Beach through December after what officials called a successful pilot program.
The pilot program was geared towards people in areas with limited bus access and was set to end in September. It will now continue through the end of the year in one zone in both Virginia Beach and Newport News.
“We are pleased with the results so far and look forward to further growth to ensure customers have access to new transit solutions that are reliable, safe, efficient and sustainable,” said William E. Harrell, HRT’s president and CEO.
According to HRT, the OnDemand service operates within a 20-square-mile zone in Newport News and a 15-square-mile zone in Virginia Beach using minivans.
Officials said rides cost $2 one way. Children under 17 ride free with a paying adult, and qualified paratransit riders and Student Freedom Pass holders also ride free.
Service runs:
- Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
