NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — As the snow fell at Norfolk International Airport, crews worked hard to clear close to 10 inches of snow that landed on the runways as multiple flights coming in and heading out faced delays or, in some cases, cancelations.
“My first flight got canceled yesterday, but they rebooked me immediately, so I felt better,” said Candice West, who is heading to Las Vegas. “And then we got here, and I was like, 30 minutes before boarding, and then they just canceled me again … so I’m just hanging onto hope that I take off tonight.”
Flight after flight has either been canceled or delayed after the forecasted snowfall came to its fruition. Some areas in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake are reporting snowfall totals of more than 10 inches — just as our Super Doppler 10 meteorologists predicted.
Every flight leaving Norfolk International Airport up to an 8:45 a.m. departure has been either delayed or canceled. More delays or cancelations continued throughout the day.
“I was originally going from here to Dallas, and then to Seattle,” said passenger Emily Henning. “And then it got changed from here to Charlotte to Seattle, and then the flight time was changed a couple times, and then it was canceled.”
All early morning flights heading to Chicago, Atlanta and Charlotte were delayed. The 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. flights to Detroit and Minneapolis were canceled. As of 4:30 p.m., many flights that were scheduled to go to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Savannah and Atlanta were delayed, with one flight to Charlotte canceled.
Arrivals to Norfolk International are also being delayed or canceled. Many flights later in the day from Washington, D.C., Charlotte and Atlanta were also showing delays.
As of 4:30 p.m., there were a number of flights scheduled to arrive Thursday evening that were showing delayed arrivals, but many flights have landed at the airport, as well.
And even though the runways were clear and open, the delays and cancelations were caused by last night’s incoming flights that were canceled.
“We got notified that the flights were delayed, and then they got delayed again, and then [they] got canceled,” said a very patient Angel Camilo, who is heading to Austin, Texas. “And then, they were telling us to kind of go ahead and rebook flights and stuff like that. So it’s kind of a whole debacle trying to figure out what’s going on.”
