HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A motorcyclist has died after evading a traffic stop and striking an SUV in Hampton on Thursday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

A Virginia State Police trooper initiated a traffic stop on the operator of a 2007 Kawasaki Motorcycle on I-664 southbound around 10:35 a.m. He was driving 100 mph in a 60-mph speed zone and refused to pull over, according to state police.

The motorcyclist increased his speed, and the trooper lost sight of him at Aberdeen Road and ended the pursuit a minute after it was initiated.

The Hampton Police Department then notified state police of a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle around 10:39 a.m. at the intersection of Aberdeen Road and Aluminum Avenue.

A preliminary investigation determined that the motorcyclist approached the intersection of Aberdeen Road and Aluminum Avenue while the traffic light was red. The motorcyclist refused to stop and continued through the intersection, where he struck the driver of a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer.

The motorcyclist, identified as 40-year-old Clifton Lee Holden, Jr., was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
