Man shot and killed inside home on Kecoughtan Road in Hampton; suspect arrested

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man died after being shot in his home on Kecoughtan Road in Hampton on Thursday night, and police have a suspect in custody.

Police said the shooting was reported at 7:49 p.m. in the 700 block of Kecoughtan Road.

Officers arrived to find a man who had been shot. He was taken to a local hospital by medics but pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police said the initial investigation revealed that the victim, identified on Friday as 57-year-old Terrell Stith, was inside his residence when he was shot by Wilgressa Johnson, a 55-year-old man from Glen Allen.

Johnson’s been charged with one count of murder, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and one count of shooting within an occupied dwelling.

The motive and circumstances are still under investigation.

10 On Your Side spoke with Stith’s neighbors and friends Friday.

You know you are at Stith’s apartment when you see the cat food on the ground, cat food in a bag, and a group of stray cats. 

“When I came this morning, I knew he didn’t feed the cats, so I came and I fed the cats because that is what he would do every morning like clockwork. He would come in and feed the cats, take the trash out, walk around, and he was good. He was a good guy,” Stith’s friend Darien Salmond said.  

According to friends, Stith was shot to death while he sat on a sofa inside Apartment F, his home.  His childhood friend, 55-year-old Johnson, is accused of pulling the trigger.  

“I do know the suspect Wilgressa Johnson. He is a nice guy when I met him. I met him a long time ago, but I don’t know what happened or what occurred,” Salmond said.

Salmond says he was introduced to Stith by Johnson. 

We also spoke to Stith’s friend, Kareen Barlow.  

“Like, if you need help, and he sees you, and you need help, he will help you. He has no problem. He was the nicest person,” Barlow said. 

We are told by friends that before leaving Hampton a few months ago, Johnson lived in Apartment H, which is a few units down from Apartment F. 

“I’ve known him my whole life. It is a tragedy what happened, and he had to go out like that man… I don’t know what happened,” Stith’s friend Nigel Brown said. “He was a good man from the neighborhood. He is like family to everybody.” 

Salmond added more details about Stiths’ friendship with Johnson.

“I have never seen them have cross words before. I have been in both their company … and never a problem. We’ve just laughed and joked around,” he said.

Barlow added, 

“He was more of a friend to me than all of them because he was always helpful.  If he was around and needed someone to talk, he would, and it is so sad what happened to him,” Barlow said. 

Johnson’s next court date is Nov. 18.
