HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The Hampton VA Healthcare System received high marks from the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA).
Recently, PVA released the results from its Hampton VAMC’s Spinal Cord Injury and Disease (SCI/D) Service survey. Those results indicate that the Hampton SCI/D Center long-term care unit is one best in the VHA system.
The PVA pointed to several strengths and best practices at the Hampton SCI/D Center, including:
- The proactive and committed leadership of Hampton’s SCI/D Chief and Chief Nurse, who are dedicated to fully serving Veterans with SCI/D and their staff.
- The Hampton SCI/D Center staff’s dedication to meeting the specialized care needs of Veterans with SCI/D.
- The accessibility and strong support from Hampton VAMC leadership, reflected in the high morale of the SCI/D team.
- The creation and implementation of a unique and effective Resident Behavior Management program.
- A comprehensive wound care program that includes quarterly hospital-wide committee meetings, a quarterly newsletter, and ongoing staff education.
- Whole Health initiatives that have been implemented for Hampton residents and staff include a tranquility room, message chairs, aroma therapy, light therapy, music therapy, creative art therapy and battlefield acupuncture.
According to the PVA, “Hampton staff’s resolute ‘Can Do’ attitude, coupled with the high morale and professionalism observed at the Center, deserves commendation.”
PVA’s praise of the Hampton VAMC’s Spinal Cord Injury and Disease (SCI/D) Service comes just days after the Office of the Inspector General released a scathing report on its findings of substandard surgical practices at the Hampton VAMC.
The new acting director of the Hampton VAMC is set to take the reins on Aug. 5.
