HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police are asking for the public’s help identifying the person or people who shot at an occupied police vehicle overnight Wednesday.

According to dispatchers, an officer was on patrol around 1:58 a.m. in the area of the 700 block of Macon Road, near Tarrant Middle School, when a passing vehicle shot at their occupied police vehicle. The marked cruiser was struck twice.

On Friday, HPD released images of the suspect vehicle in this case, which is described as a dark red or maroon four-door sedan.

After the cruiser was shot, other other officers in their own vehicles attempted to catch the suspect vehicle.

The suspect evaded the officers. None of the officers involved in the incident were injured. Officials believe the cruiser was targeted by the suspect or suspects.

Interim Hampton Police Chief Kenneth Ferguson told WAVY the officers involved are undergoing stress counseling before they are cleared to return to work.

“The officers seem to be doing fine. My experience tells me that it probably hasn’t hit them yet. It’ll probably be when they get home later tonight. And you start thinking, you’re by yourself with your family, it will set in what occurred,” said Interim Chief Ferguson.

There have been increased patrols in the community. This is the second shooting reported in the community in recent days. Last Monday, a woman was shot while driving her car down Macon Road in Hampton. Neighbors are “terrified” after these shootings.

Ferguson said this shooting will not deter them from their mission to rid the area of crime.

“We’re there. We’re not deterred. We will be there for the community. We’re going to be there until we can eradicate the criminal element that’s there,” Ferguson said.

One resident asked, “Who do we turn to? There is nothing we can do to keep our family safe.”
