HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Crews with Hampton Fire and Rescue were able to save a driver after a medical scare on I-64 Friday morning, Virginia State Police said.

According to officials, around 6:15 a.m., troopers were dispatched to I-64 eastbound near Mercury Boulevard for reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Prior to VSP’s arrival to the scene, crews with Hampton Fire and Rescue were able to locate an unconscious man who was slumped over the steering wheel. Shortly afterwards, crews were able to determine that the driver’s blood glucose level was below 30, which indicated diabetic shock, police said.

Crews then immediately administered glucose to the driver, leading to the driver being revived. The driver was then taken to Sentara CarePlex Hospital for further observation, police said.

Traffic cam from the scene early Friday morning showed the eastbound right lane and right shoulder closed.
