HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY)– Hampton firefighters said more than 20 people lost their homes after an apartment complex caught fire early Wednesday morning.

According to officials, crews were called to the Magruder Run Apartments on Secretariat Lane at 1:23 a.m. for a potential fire.

When crews got to the complex, they saw smoke coming from the roof of the building. The first responding crew said they upgraded the call to a 2-alarm fire to double the manpower. Crews said they were able to put the fire out less than an hour later.

All residents had evacuated before first responders got to the complex. Officials said no one was hurt, but one cat is still missing.

Crews also shared 12 apartments are now unlivable due to water damage, impacting more than 20 residents.

They are now being assisted by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
