HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – In observance of American Heart Month, the American Heart Association is once again spotlighting the number one killer of women, Cardiovascular Disease.
This comes as one-in-three women will have heart disease and one-in-three women will die from heart disease, according to AHA. In fact, heart disease takes the lives of more women than all forms of cancer combined.
So, in a continued effort for awareness, the American Heart Association Hampton Roads will host it’s annual ‘Go Red For Women‘ luncheon on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. The event will be held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, located at 1610 Coliseum Drive, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The powerful message that will sound off throughout this year’s luncheon is “addressing women’s heart health at any age, stage and season of life,” as more than 400 women draped in red are expected to come out to champion for the cause.
Twelve survivors who’ve beat the odds against Cardiovascular Disease will be highlighted. Among those brave women set to share their personal health journey is Laura Coates. The CNN Anchor and Chief Legal Analyst is tapped to deliver the keynote address.
“I think when we hear it from other women and we hear about the unique situations that impacted them, it really gives us pause to take a moment to learn more about our own risk factors and how we can take preventative measures to take care of ourselves,” says Adria Vanhoozier, ‘Go Red For Women’ luncheon chair. “Laura Coates is an extremely dynamic woman and we’re very honored to have her as part of the event this year.”
The event will also feature a Festival of Red Expo, a survivors fashion show and a silent auction for all to participate and enjoy, plus something new.
“We are going to be introducing the Live Fierce Awards for the American Heart Association,” says Vanhoozier. “It is giving us the opportunity to recognize four remarkable women who are advocating in our communities, emphasizing having health equity and really coming together to recognize the needs in our community.”
WAVY TV 10 Morning Anchor, Katie Collett, and Evening Anchor, Aesia Toliver, will serve as the event emcee’s. The luncheon would not be possible without the support of Riverside Health, Bon Secours Hampton Roads, TowneBank, Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, HII and its Newport News Shipbuilding Division and Goodman & Sons Jewelers. You can purchase tickets here.
And always remember, Go Red For Women is more than a luncheon, its a movement and one celebrating 21 years of helping to save women’s lives. We hope to see you there.
