HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – A two-year-old was reported dead Tuesday after a fatal crash on I-64 westbound in Hampton July 30, according to Virginia State Police.
Troopers say the accident occurred around 8:35 p.m., in which a 2011 Toyota Sienna was hit from behind by a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. The collision caused the Sienna to spin out and strike a 2004 Honda Accord, before hitting a jersey wall on the left side of the interstate.
The Cruze struck a guard rail on the right side of the interstate.
The two-year-old boy in the Sienna was taken to an area hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries. A 36-year-old woman in the Sienna suffered serious injuries and was also taken to an area hospital.
The driver of the Sienna, a 37-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Cruze, 39-year-old Victor Martin Mendez was charged with following too closely and was not injured in the incident.
The driver of the Accord was also unharmed.
VSP says the accident occurred in a non-active work zone and they are continuing to investigate the incident.
