HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – A 15-year-old is facing charges in connection with a shooting on Buckroe Beach June 22 that sent two adults and two children to the hospital.

Hampton Police announced the arrest on July 19 and said the male juvenile has been charged with three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, two counts of maiming, one count of aggravated malicious wounding, one count of reckless handling of a firearm, one count of shooting in public with injury, and one count of possession of a firearm by a juvenile.

Four people were injured when gunshots rang out at the beach just before 8 p.m. on June 22: a 7-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, a 31-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man.

10 On Your Side spoke with the mother of a 12-year-old who was shot.

Jate Henley said the arrest is a relief, but she’s shocked at how young he is. Meanwhile, her son is still recovering.

“It was one of the police officers and I shouted over the telephone with joy,” Henley said.

Those gunshots still haunt Henley’s 12-year-old son, Kreetay Briggs. He nearly died after a bullet pierced his stomach and went through his back.

He says he’s relieved too. “Yea I’m real happy,” Briggs said. “I’m just glad that they found somebody and arrested them and that justice will be served, not only for my son but for the other people that were harmed,” Henley said.

The mother also said she has a lot of questions about how someone so young is involved.

“Why he was out there and why he was out there with a gun and how he got ahold of it. Did somebody give it to him, was it bought, did he find it?” Henley asked.

As they wait for answers, Briggs is slowly on the mend.

“I’m feeling better now. I’m not in pain like I used to be,” Briggs said. “Just my leg bothers me still because I got shot in my artery and colon.”

Briggs is going to physical therapy and is also in counseling.

Despite his situation, he’s still smiling and grateful for the community’s support.

“I just wanna tell them thank you for helping me with all the stuff, the text, the gift cards, the bikes,” Briggs said.

This is the first arrest in the case, but police believe there could be at least one more suspect. They are asking anyone who took photos or videos the night of the incident at Buckroe Beach to send them to the Hampton Police Division at hamptonpdpio@hampton.gov.

The Newport News Police Department’s Fugitive Unit is assisting with this investigation.
