CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – In a 7-0 vote, Chesapeake city council voted not to move forward with the proposed data center in the Great Bridge area, according to Director of Public Communications in Chesapeake Heath Covey.
Covey told 10 On Your Side city council initially planned to motion to continue the project, until a member recommended a substitute motion to not move forward with the project as presented.
Dr. Richard West was excused from voting, while Daniel Whitaker abstained.
10 On Your Side Cheyenne Pagan attended the quarterly Town Meeting on June 4, where concerned residents voiced their opinions on the project.
“Why do they want to put this 350,000-square-foot noise machine butting up right against property lines,” said Great Bridge resident Dennis Cashman.
The Chesapeake Planning Commission originally voted in May not to recommend the project.
“Chesapeake has a lot of already zoned industrial sites,” Cashman said. “Why don’t we build it in an existing zoned industrial site?”
The proposed facility would have been Hampton Roads’ first industrial scale data center.
