GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — A man has died after a vehicle crash on Route 17 on Thursday.

According to officials, around 3:45 a.m., Virginia State Police were dispatched to the northbound lanes of Route 17 nearby T.C. Walker Road for reports of a single-vehicle crash. This is in Gloucester County.

An initial investigation determined that the driver of a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer, later identified as 24-year-old Tyler M. Simmons, was traveling northbound along Route 17 when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road, ultimately striking a tree in the median and catching fire.

Police said Simmons was partially ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. Simmons was then taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Police said Simmons was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
