GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — A Gloucester man will serve no jail time after his 45-year sentence was suspended.

In August 2024, investigators with the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office received information about child sexual abuse that occurred between 1999-2007. The reporting party indicated that they had been sexually abused by an older man known to them — much of which occurred prior to the victim’s 13th birthday.

Investigators began looking into the case approximately six weeks after receiving information about the allegations. During that time, they conducted multiple interviews and worked to gather evidence to support the allegations. On Sept. 3, 2024, the case was presented to Gloucester County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and subsequently to the Grand Jury.

After hearing the evidence, the Grand Jury issued indictments charging 62-year-old Robert Wayne Hinson with multiple counts of aggravated sexual battery and forcible sodomy of a victim under the age of 13.

On April 21, 2025, Hinson was arrested and pleaded guilty in the Gloucester County Circuit Court to two counts of aggravated sexual battery of a victim under the age of 13 and one count of forcible sodomy of a victim under the age of 13.

Hinson was originally sentenced to 45 years in prison but they were suspended. He will now only serve 20 years on probation. He must register as a sex offender in addition to other requirements.
