FORT WALTON BEACH, Fl. (WAVY) — The former Spirit of Norfolk has made it to her final resting place.
The former dinner vessel that cruised the Elizabeth River for 30 years before a fire consumed it back in June 2022 has been sunk off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach.
Alex Fogg, natural resources chief for the visitors bureau, said 188 foot long boat now sits in 128 feet of water as part of their already vast artificial reef program.
“The vessel, which has 51ft of relief, was sunk as part of a Joint U.S. Air Force demonstration,” Fogg said. “We are excited to continue to meet multiple program objectives in partnership with Eglin AFB.”
The sinking marks the end of a three year journey for the ship that holds many memories for those who made memories on her decks.
