ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — Supervisor William M. McCarty of the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors, died Saturday evening. He was 48.

The announcement was made by his church, Healing Waters Worship Center, where McCarty also served as pastor.

Arrangements for his funeral is as follows:

Visitation – 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025 at Healing Waters Worship Center, 12712 Smiths Neck Rd, Carrollton, VA

Funeral – 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025 at World Outreach Christian Center, 1233 Shields Rd, Newport News, VA

McCarty was in his third term representing the Carrollton area of the county.

“We join our community and his family in grieving the loss of Pastor “MAC” McCarty,” Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post. “As a former Chairman of the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors he understood first responders well. Chairman McCarty was especially thoughtful with the ever evolving needs of our office. We are thankful for his many years of guidance and support.”

McCarthy additionally served as a chairman member of the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization from 2023 – 2025.

According to Virginia Church of God State Office, McCarty died of double pneumonia. McCarthy is survived by his wife and their children.

Assistant County Commissioner Don Robertson told WAVY the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors planned to call a special meeting Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. to discuss the unexpected passing and how to proceed in his sudden absence. They will determine what actions the board will need to take to fill the vacancy in accordance with the Code of Virginia, Robertson said.
