Family and community members gather to remember Rolin Hill

All three suspects made their first appearance on Monday morning. They all have a bond hearing Wednesday with the trial date to be picked on Jan. 21.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Three former Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office deputies were indicted for the in-custody death of Rolin Hill. Former Deputies Kevin Wilson, Michael Kidd and Eric Baptiste were charged with second-degree murder.

On Saturday, Hill’s family alongside community members came together at Mount Trashmore Park in Virginia Beach to remember him.

“I was [a] very, very proud father on that precious day, that first precious day of holding him. I can still remember that day, and that’s what you gotta have these days, memories of what has happened, but also the fight for justice for what has happened,” said Rolin’s father, Stanley Hill.

“Just embrace your family and friends. Spend time with them. Even when you are upset with them, because that does happen, and just continue to pray for us and pray for us to get justice,” said Gail Hill, his mother.

Rolin was hospitalized and died after being restrained by deputies at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center according to authorities in June 2024.

Hill was arrested at a 7-Eleven after management says he was causing a disturbance.

His family continues to fight for justice wearing and handing out green “Justice for Rolin” buttons, his favorite color and a symbol of mental health awareness.

“Too many people, this is just a conversation, but to the people out here, this means something. Rolin was a real person. It’s not just a hashtag. We don’t let you ever think he was just or is just a hashtag. This man saved lives, even in his untimely demise,” said JaPharii Jones, Black Lives Matter 757 leader.

At the vigil, people gave speeches, prayers, and a call to change as people gathered to hear stories about Rolin, including how he was an organ donor and how he helped save four people after he died.

“He’s my hero. That was [an] amazing feat. It was sad that night, but we knew the next day in Ohio, somebody had my son’s heart,” said Stanley.

Authorities say all three former Sheriff’s deputies turned themselves in and are held without bail. Eric Baptiste is being held at the Norfolk City Jail, according to the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office. Kidd and Wilson are being held by the Chesapeake Magistrate’s Office.

All three made their first appearance on Monday morning in Virginia Beach Circuit Court via video arraignment.

They all have a bond hearing Wednesday with the trial date to be picked on Jan. 21.
