PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The High Street Ferry Dock in Portsmouth reopened Thursday and service has resumed.
The dock underwent planned repairs that began Monday. The closure was only expected to last a day, but took longer than expected.
The dock repair work was unrelated to an incident this past Friday, involving an Elizabeth River Ferry. HRT had to temporarily suspend service Friday after a ferry boat hit the seawall.
Around 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 19, the captain of Elizabeth River Ferry V approached the High Street Dock in Portsmouth too quickly, and hit the seawall with a passenger on board. No injuries were reported, and the U.S. Coast Guard was notified.
The ferry was taken out of service so crews could assess the damage. While waiting for a replacement, a shuttle was available to transport customers between ferry docks.
“We understand this is inconvenient for our customers,” said William Harrell, President and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit. “But we want everyone to know we are doing everything we can to get the ferry back in service as soon as possible.”
Ferry service was restored around 8:30 p.m. using Elizabeth River Ferry IV, and the shuttle service was discontinued.
To track changes in service, customers can visit gohrt.com and follow Hampton Roads Transit on Facebook.
