Dominion Energy committed to Energy Share programs to help people amid heat wave

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — If your air conditioner is on, chances are it’s working overtime, and that means a higher energy bill, but there are challenges ahead for some low-income families as funding for some agencies and assistance programs is on ice.

Dominion Energy has been helping thousands of Virginians pay their energy bills for years, and this week’s forecasted high temperatures highlight the need some have to get help paying those energy bills.

Whether by the fan, or near water, trying to stay cool comes with a cost.

“Because it’s hot, people are going to turn on their air conditioning and keep it running,” said Dominion Energy spokesperson Cherise Newsome. “More energy use leads to an increase in your bill.”

And those increases come at a time when many already face financial challenges. Earlier this year, the Trump administration laid off the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program staff and has proposed a federal budget that allocates nothing for some Energy Assistance programs.

“There are many partner agencies in the community that we are working with as they are facing budget shortfalls or challenges,” Newsome said.

Newsome said Dominion is committed to bridging the gaps with bill payment and weatherization assistance. Dominion has plans to continue full steam ahead and partner with those who need them most.

“When the temperatures are forecasted at 92 degrees or higher, Dominion Energy does not disconnect customers, so even if you’ve fallen behind on your bill, we’ll definitely work with you because we want you to be cool and comfortable in your home,” Newsome said.
