Cox outage reported Monday in Hampton Roads

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Cox Communications customers throughout Hampton Roads experienced at least some service disruption Monday afternoon.

Downdetector reported the outages happened around 2 p.m. and said it mostly affected affecting Hampton Roads.

WAVY viewers who do have partial service said they were able to access some websites but not others. Other viewers reported total outages, from Virginia Beach, to the Peninsula, to Gloucester on the Middle Peninsula.

A message to Cox customers said the issue was affecting TV, internet and phone services. The time of repair for all three was just after 6 p.m. Monday, Cox said.

As of 3:15 p.m., some services have returned in parts of Hampton Roads, however, it was not yet confirmed for much of the region.

Around 4:30 p.m., a COX spokesperson said services were in the process of coming back.

“We are aware of an issue that impacted services for some of our customers in the Hampton Roads area. At this time, services are in the process of coming back online. If customers are still experiencing issues they can access customer support through the Cox app,” the spokesperson said in an email.

Cox declined to say how many people were affected or what the cause of the issue was. A spokesperson also declined to give details on what’s being done to make sure a similar outage doesn’t happen in the future.

“While I don’t have any additional details, we recognize the frustration yesterday’s outage caused. We know how important a reliable internet connection is, especially during these times, and we’ll continue to work directly with our customers should they need assistance,” the spokesperson wrote in a follow-up email Tuesday.
