CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The owner of the auto repair shop that caught fire in Chesapeake Wednesday morning is still picking up the pieces more than 48 hours later.

Firefighters were called to the 2900 block of South Military Highway around 5:20 a.m. for reports of a commercial building fire.

The fire had spread to cars on the property and caused the Westbound Lanes of South Military Highway to close for a period of time. It was marked under control around 6 a.m.

“I cried — my first reaction was to cry, because I just couldn’t believe it,” said Morgan Ford, the business owner’s daughter.

Ford said her dad, Tyrone, has been a mechanic for years and his passion led him to open up ‘the Shop’ in 2014. Ford explained that she was in shock when she got the phone call about the fire from her parents Wednesday morning.

“By the time I got here, the firefighting team had most of the fire down, but I can surely see what the fire had done already for the last four or five hours,” Ford said.

The fire left behind charred cars and a burned building.

“The left side of the foundation, it’s brick that’s still left, but everything [including] the interior has been destroyed,” Ford said.

The Ford family is now picking up the pieces of what’s left of the business. And while they do that, Ford started a GoFundMe to help her dad get back on his feet.

“We hope to have a grand opening one day, like we did back in 2014,” Ford said. “We’re just going to remain hopeful, and with the support from our church family, the community and all of our loved ones, we hope and see good things in the future so he can continue to live on his passion.”

No injuries were reported, and no one was inside when it broke out.
