CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake police arrested a 19-year-old man after a shooting that sent two people to the hospital on Wednesday morning.

Antonio Vass is charged with aggravated malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding, use of a firearm in committing a felony, reckless handling of a firearm and willfully discharging firearm in a public place.

A police spokesman told 10 On Your Side that the shooting happened around 10:20 a.m. in a neighborhood adjacent to the Western Branch schools. That is near the intersection of Worthing Lane and Bruin Drive.

When police arrived on the scene, they found bullet shell casings in the 4300 block of Worthing Lane.

Two men were shot and self-transported to a local hospital, officials add. They are both believed to have non life-threatening injuries.

WAVY’s crew at the scene saw police take Vass into custody.

As a result of the shooting, Western Branch High School, Western Branch Middle School, Western Branch Primary School and Western Branch Intermediate School were on a temporary lockdown. It was lifted around 11:30 a.m.

The following message was adapted and sent to families of the four schools on lockdown:

Good afternoon. This is ____________________, principal of ______________________ School, with an important message.

At approximately 10:50 a.m. this morning, the Chesapeake Police Department informed us that there was a shooting in the neighboring area, and recommended that we go into a level one lockdown as a precautionary measure.

During a level one lockdown instruction continues and faculty and students stay inside the building. After approximately twenty-five minutes, the police gave us an all-clear, the lockdown was lifted, and we resumed our school day. Please know that safety is always our top priority at _______________________ School. Thank you.

The investigation is ongoing and no other details have been released.
