CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man riding his bike was injured after a hit-and-run on South Military Highway Tuesday, and a Chesapeake woman is calling on the public to help police find the driver who hit her son, who she said was left for dead.
According to officials, just before 6 p.m. officers were dispatched to South Military Highway, near the I-64 westbound exit, for reports of a hit-and-run.
Officers arrived to the scene and determined that a man was traveling westbound on South Military Highway from the nearby Exxon when he was struck by a vehicle. Police said there was no witnesses or video of the incident.
The victim was then transferred to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Thanks to doctors at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Tracey Webb might be able to sleep tonight. Since Tuesday night, her son, Darvel Gray, 34, has undergone multiple surgeries, including one to reattach his ear.
From the intensive care unit at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, doctors have worked around the clock to save Gray’s life.
His near-death experience started around 6 p.m. Tuesday as Gray was cycling westbound on South Military Highway near the Interstate 64 westbound exit.
“He was telling me that he was riding his bike from the Cavalier Gas Station to Exxon,” Webb said. “As I said, it’s on Cavalier Boulevard. He was riding back to my husband’s truck yard, which is on Military Highway as well. … And all of a sudden, [it] seemed like a big truck or something … hit him. He didn’t see it. He just went flying.”
A Good Samaritan called 911.
“They advised the Chesapeake Police that my son was laying on the side of the road bleeding,” Webb said. “He was just laying there with all of those major injuries. … Basically, he suffered two major incisions. His head was open on both sides. They had to stitch his head up on both sides. He has stitches and staples on both sides of his head. They had to reattach his ear. He broke his collarbone. He broke his shoulder. [Doctors] had to do two surgeries on him yesterday for his shoulder.”
Gray is a maintenance technician and a graphic artist. His mother prays someone will come forward in a hit-and-run case that police say was not caught on camera.
“I’m certain that … somebody saw something, and I just want somebody to speak up,” she said.
The incident remains under investigation.
