CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The final wave of students in the region, including Chesapeake, Isle of Wight County and Accomack County, will be headed back to class Tuesday morning.

10 On Your Side’s Michael Rinker was at Crestwood Elementary School in Chesapeake Tuesday morning, where students got to see the new campus for the school.

According to officials, the new building for the elementary school will now house more students, expanding to a K-5 school. It will also feature a redesigned cafeteria and classrooms.

With the addition of younger students, that presents new opportunities and challenges for teachers.

“They are excited, most of them only have that three to five experience so having K through two and the different needs they have, I think that enthusiasm will carry itself throughout the whole year,” said Crestwood principal Dr. Mattie Gould.

For the district overall, with the latest start to the school year in the region, students will finish out their school year on June 16. Students will also get three days off for Thanksgiving, 10 days for winter break and six days for spring break.

Chesapeake Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jared Cotton once was a student at Chesapeake Intermediate and later returned to the school as a 5th grade teacher.

“With the new school opening it is bittersweet for me to see all of this come together and see the school come into place,” said Dr. Cotton.

Chesapeake City Public Schools recently saw great achievements in the classroom, with students testing above the state average on SOLs in every single category for the 2024-25 school year. The district was also honored for its music program, being named a “Best Community” for music education by the Music Merchants Foundation.

“In Chesapeake we promote a high level of learning for our students, student centered learning. We want our students to be excited to learn,” Cotton added. “The hard work happens in the classroom, our teachers are excited and can’t wait to get started.”
