CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A daycare worker faces six charges after investigators say two separate infants were injured as a result of diaper changes.

Carolyn Tinkey, 19, of Chesapeake was arrested Tuesday and charged with child cruelty, child abuse, failing to secure medical attention for an injured child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of assault and battery.

The crimes occurred Sept. 9 and Nov. 11 at La Petite Acadamy’s Plantation Lake Circle location, according to court records. In one case, an infant’s injury required surgery to repair the damage.

While 10 On Your Side can’t confirm if Tinkey’s employment status with the childcare center, a bail determination sheet indicates her place of employment is now “house cleaning.”

Neither Tinkey or La Petite’s parent company, Leaning Care Center, immediately returned requests for comment.

In both cases, the children faced injuries to their genitalia.

In the first case, a five-month-old boy was taken to the doctor when the parents discovered a bruise on the baby’s penis, according to a criminal complaint.

Tinkey told the parents that the bruise was discovered while she was changing the boy’s diaper.

“The [CHKD Child Advocacy Center] believes the injury came from a forceful pinch to the tip of the baby’s penis,” the detective wrote.

In November, a four-month-old girl had to undergo surgery at CHKD after she suffered “severe lacerations to her genital area.”

Video evidence revealed Tinkey as the only staff member to do a diaper change on the day of the injury, according to a detective’s narrative.

“During the diaper change, Ms. Tinkey stated she did not observe blood or injury to the genital area initially, however, admitted she did wipe (the infant) with a wet wipe and could have wiped too hard, causing injury,” the detective wrote.

Detectives state that Tinkey has been cooperative. She herself has a one-year-old son.

It has been requested a judge not allow her to be with children other than her own.
