UPDATE: Captain E.R. Jefferies was selected for the open city council seat, during the Chesapeake City Council meeting Tuesday, Sept. 16.


CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Candidates for the vacant seat on Chesapeake City Council were announced Tuesday night.

Following the sudden death last month of longtime Vice Mayor Dr. John de Triquet, who served more than 30 years on the Chesapeake City Council, it is state law that the remaining council members appoint a replacement within 30 days of the vacancy.

The replacement shall be a qualified voter of the city and shall serve as an interim Council Member, fulfilling the remainder of de Triquet’s term.

His term was set to end Dec. 31, 2026. 

Mayor Rick West said former City Council candidate and current Police Captain E. R. Jeff Jefferies and former City Councilman Dwight Parker are going to be up for a vote next week to fulfill the term of late Vice Mayor John de Triquet.
