CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man who was 17 when he was initially charged in connection to the June 2024 homicide of Khyree Malik Slan in Chesapeake is scheduled to have his case in court next month to have a date set for his trial, online court records state.

Unnamed at the time, Desmond Josiah Santiago, now 18, was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony-first offense and underage possession of a handgun.
Since that time, the second-degree murder charge has been upgraded to a first-degree murder charge, online court documents indicate.
Santiago’s case will be in Chesapeake Circuit Court April 4 to set a trial date.
On June 8, 2024, Chesapeake officers responded to the 1100 block of Sir Lancelot Drive in reference to an injured person. When they arrived, they found Khyree Malik Slan, 21, with a gunshot wound and life-threatening injuries.
Slan was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
