CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake babysitter who pleaded guilty to severely injuring a toddler in her care is scheduled to be sentenced May 23.
In January, Jamie Shaffer entered a guilty plea for non-capital murder. Her other charges were nolle prossed.
In February 2019, Shaffer was babysitting an infant, identified as Daniel Scrivner, when Chesapeake rescue crews responded to his home and found him unresponsive.
Scrivner was taken to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk. Trauma to his brain caused massive swelling and doctors were forced to remove part of his skull to alleviate the pressure.
By June 2019, Scrivner had been released from the hospital but still required around-the-clock care. He was later pronounced deceased in December of that year.
Schaffer’s sentencing is set for May 23.
