VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It’s summer, and as more people head to the beach, experts say jellyfish sightings are common along our local shores.

Moon jellies and stinging nettles are the most frequently spotted species, especially after storms. While they’re beautiful to watch, jellyfish can deliver a painful sting — sometimes triggering serious reactions.

Experts recommend rinsing stings with vinegar or salt water — not fresh water — to deactivate the stinging cells. Lifeguards say they monitor anyone stung for adverse reactions and keep them out of the water for at least 30 minutes.

To help beachgoers stay alert, there’s a free app called JellyWatch, which allows people to report and view jellyfish sightings in real time — no account needed.

So enjoy your time at the beach — but remember, we’re sharing the ocean with some fascinating sea life.
