DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – The Marc Basnight Bridge was shut down Monday afternoon after a portion of a modular home blew off a trailer, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The incident happened at 1:38 p.m. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said winds were gusting 65-70 mph at the time, which caused the mobile home to disconnect from the frame of the trailer.
The mobile home then overturned and landed on the Marc Basnight Bridge railing system.
WAVY 10 viewer Regan Young sent pictures and video of the blown-off module home on the road.

Conlee Tickle passed by the scene and was worried the mobile home was going to go over the bridge, “I was nervous cause I thought it was going to keep tipping and that it was actually going to push it all the way off the bridge. And look like where it got snagged on the side of the trailer with the bridge, it looked like it was going to be able to, but it looked like it was getting close to being able to tip completely off the bridge.”
The bridge spans NC12 across the Oregan Inlet between Bodie Island and Hatteras Island.
According to the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, high winds slowed down the recovery process.
NCDOT originally estimated the road would re-open to traffic around 5:30 p.m., but it didn’t reopen until almost 9:30 p.m. Check drivenc.com for real-time traffic conditions.
