NEWSOMS, Va. (WAVY) — An 18-year-old has been issued a summons after attempting to cross train tracks while a train was entering the crossing Friday afternoon in Newsoms, according to the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the accident happened around 1:15 p.m. on Cypress Bridge Road, which is just off General Thomas Highway.
Upon arrival, deputies found a Dodge Durango had attempted to cross the train tracks and a train entered the crossing simultaneously.
The driver, identified as 18-year-old Riley Jordan Lowe, did not report any injuries. However, the vehicle sustained heavy damage.
No one on the train reported any injuries and the train was later able to continue to its destination.
Lowe was issued a summons for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.
Traffic was not significantly impacted due to the crash, and Cypress Bridge Road and General Thomas Highway were able to remain open while the scene was investigated.
