Letters ‘SEF’ etched onto door at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) — The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse along North Carolina’s Outer Banks was recently vandalized, officials say.

According to a post on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Facebook page, the letters “SEF” were etched onto the original bronze door at the lighthouse.

Superintendent David Hallac stated in the post:

“Many residents of Hatteras Island have served as lighthouse keepers in the 1800s and 1900s, taking care of the this iconic structure and helping to protect mariners off the coast. It is important that we treat the lighthouse with respect to honor the structure itself and the legacy of those that served in it.”

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was  completed in 1870, and is a National Historic Landmark.
