WINDSOR, N.C. (WAYY) — A correctional officer at Bertie Correctional Institution was assaulted by an inmate Friday afternoon.

According to a release from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Angel Phillips struck an officer in the head and facial area with his fist around 3 p.m.

The officer was treated for non life-threatening injuries and Phillips had minor injuries.

Officials say no one else was injured and the incident is under internal investigation. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety says it’s cooperating with local law enforcement in regards to any criminal charges that may be filed.

Phillips is serving a life sentence with parole for the murder of a 19-year-old in Durham back in 2013

SPECIAL REPORT: Danger Behind Bars

Bertie Correctional is the same location where correctional Sgt. Meggan Callahan was fatally attacked in April 2017.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations says Callahan was beat over the head with a fire extinguisher after having hot water thrown on her face. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against her attacker, Craig Wissink.

The most recent attack at Bertie happened in May, when an inmate stabbed another with a shank. The victim in that incident had serious injuries.

REPORT: Understaffing, corners cut at NC prison where 4 died

In November of 2017, investigators say four inmates attacked and killed four correctional officers at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in a failed escape. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against all four in that case.
