VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Roads Transit will continue its service suspension into Friday due to continued weather conditions that include icy roads, high snowbanks, inaccessible bus stops and unplowed secondary roads.
Suspended service affects all systemwide bus routes, paratransit service, the Tide Light Rail, Elizabeth River Ferry, OnDemand ridesharing and the Base Express at Naval Station Norfolk.
Now, all the people who catch a ride to work will need to find a new way to get there.
Hampton Roads Transit told 10 On Your Side it has been in touch with some employers, the majority of whose employees rely on HRT to get to work.
“Unfortunately, all the services are down to give roads some time to clear up,” said Thomas Becher with HRT. “You know many businesses and government offices are closed, and that’s a good chunk of our ridership. We did communicate with some of our largest employers, the shipyard, for example, about our plans so that they can plan ahead as well.”
One rider, Frederic Duzant, said he was expecting major delays, but not cancellations. Duzant said once it’s back to normal, he will be back on the bus.
“I will be at the bus stop being patient,” said Duzant.
HRT says safety for its drivers and riders is the priority.
“We have a plan where if there are six inches of snow or more, we cancel service altogether. We also have instances where from a dusting or two inches, we continue operating, but we may amend that,” said Becher.
HRT has more than 2,700 bus stop shelters, train platforms and ferry docks. Becher said all those need to be treated and cleared.
“We realize that a majority of our riders need us to get to work, and we understand that inconvenience. But it is a matter of really safety and logistics at this point. And we’re focusing on getting operations back as quickly as possible on a day-to-day basis,” said Becher.
