VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Officials say that a woman shot her husband to death before taking her own life about two hours after the couple’s Virginia Beach home was “intentionally” set on fire.
The arson is the latest update in the Aug. 8 murder-suicide that resulted in the death of 57-year-old William Davis and his 50-year-old wife Belinda.
The couple was found shot to death on I-264 west after the Carolina Marine Structures work truck they were traveling in crashed into the Jersey wall near the London Bridge Boulevard exit, according to court documents.
William and Belinda Davis both died of gunshot wounds to the head; however, Belinda’s cause of death was ruled a suicide by the Office of the Medical Examiner.
The murder-suicide happened around 10 a.m., only two-and-a-half hours after the Virginia Beach Fire Department responded to a fire at the Davis’ home in the 5700 block of Paiute Road.
Fire officials say that the house fire that killed one dog was “intentionally set,” and that the couple wasn’t home around 7:20 a.m. when firefighters arrived.
Virginia Beach fire officials say their accelerant detecting K-9 Sadie alerted investigators of areas with traces of ignitable liquid in the couples’ home.
William Davis learned about the fire around 9 a.m. when his boss got a call from the Virginia Beach Fire Marshal. Shortly after the phone call, Belinda Davis walked onto her husband’s job site at the Virginia Beach boardwalk and he told her about the fire, court documents state.
Belinda Davis “showed no outward emotion to the news” of the house fire, according to court documents.
The couple left the worksite in a company truck. About 15 minutes later, William Davis’ boss was driving on I-264 when he saw the company truck crashed on the road.
