PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — With another week of hot weather expected in Hampton Roads, it’s important to use sunscreen — but are you using the right kind?
There are two types of sunscreen, mineral and organic. Mineral sunscreen uses ingredients like zinc oxide and sits on your skin to protect it, while organic absorbs into your skin.
10 On Your Side’s Julia Avery sat down with the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School at ODU about what people should consider while buying sunscreen.
“As you are going to buy sunscreen, see what the ingredients are, I think that’s the important component,” Rehan Qayyum said. “And one for which there’s increasing evidence that perhaps it’s not as beneficial, or may be harmful for humans, is Benzophenone 3, or the name oxybenzone. And if that ingredient is there, see if you can buy an alternate one.”
Qayyum also said there is increasing evidence that oxybenzone can impact your hormones and white blood cells, as well as potentially being harmful to marine life.
