HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Police have identified the victim in in a late-night homicide that killed one and injured another.

Police say 37-year-old Dorsey Stephenson died of gunshot wounds after he was shot in the 900 block of Ridgeway Avenue.

Police are still looking for a suspect in that shooting.

Meanwhile friends and coworkers are remembering Stephenson, saying it’s a big loss for those who knew him.

“My heart was shattered,” said Sarah Skowronski. “You’re going to bring in the new year knowing that your homie is gone, your friend’s gone.”

Friends of Dorsey Stephenson said they’re shaken by the news of his passing.

“My mind’s been racing. I’m just in total shock,” Skowronski said.

Stephenson and another man were shot Sunday night outside of a home in Hampton. Skowronski said she learned about Stephenson’s death through a friend.

“It was devastating because I woke up early in the morning seeing and heard about it. That’s nothing you want to wake up to,” she said.

Skowronski said Stephenson was a good friend she met when he lived back in Franklin.

She described him as someone who had a good head on his shoulders and always looked out for others.

“He was cool, kind, laughable. You could laugh with him. He would call and check up on you, whenever you needed someone he was there for you,” Skowronski said.

Since the news of his passing, friends and coworkers have posted tributes online.

Stephenson’s employer Rod Busters, Inc. posted a message saying the company “lost a valuable team mate” and “you will be forever missed.”

Friends echoed that sentiment.

“He was a wonderful friend. He’d never met a stranger,” Skowronski said.

Investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting. Friends are hopeful a suspect is found soon.

“He’s going to be missed. I miss him. I’m not going to say goodbye, I’m just going to see him later,” Skowronski said.

The other person injured in the shooting was treated for non life-threatening injuries. If you have any information about this homicide, you’re asked to call the Crime Line at 1-877-LOCK-U-UP.
