Virginia’s 3-day sales tax holiday is Aug. 1-3

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia’s annual combined sales tax holiday weekend is the first weekend in August. For 2025, it’s Aug. 1-3. Consumers can get eligible hurricane preparedness items, clothing and school supplies, and Energy Star and WaterSense items without paying the state sales and use tax.

Lawmakers extended the Combined Sales Tax Holiday through July 1, 2030 during a 2023 Special Session.


What items are eligible?

This applies to both in-store and online purchases.

The Department of Taxation worked with retailers and state agencies to develop these guidelines.
