HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A woman has died following a shooting in Hampton early Tuesday morning.
According to police, officers were called to the Quality Inn hotel located in the 2100 block of West Mercury Blvd just after midnight for the report of a shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they found a man and woman who had been shot.


They were both taken to the hospital by members of the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue with life-threatening injuries.
The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police later identified the victim as 24-year-old Monica Rodriguez.
After investigating, it was revealed that the two victims were walking towards their room when they were confronted by the suspect. After an exchange of words, the suspect shot both victims then fled the scene on foot.
When 10 On Your Side arrived, police taped off the back parking lot of the hotel as they forensic took pictures and evidence markers lined the floor.
Residents told us they heard the shots fired around midnight.
Another guest who has lived in the hotel for more than a month is rethinking staying here due to her safety.
“Everybody seems friendly and now this happens. I got to think about staying here because I’m scared now. I really am, cause my grandkids come out here and play at nighttime sometimes,” said the guest.
