VB officer struck with ‘mallet type weapon’ while taking man into custody on Regency Drive

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach Police took a man into custody after an hourslong barricade situation on Regency Drive on Wednesday afternoon.

Virginia Beach Police posted on Twitter around 3:10 p.m., saying they were in the 700 block of Regency Drive for a barricaded suspect.

There were no hostages reported, just a man inside wanted in connection with a robbery, police said.

Police said they first received a report of an assault at a Kangaroo gas station at 1912 Laskin Road.

Officers responded and spoke with the victim of the assault, who sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Officers also established that a robbery had happened.

They tracked the suspect in the incident to a residence in the 700 block of Regency Drive.

Officers attempted to make contact with the man, but he refused to communicate with them. They were able to establish that he was the only person inside the house.

“After an extended period of time trying to make contact with the suspect, a chemical agent was deployed to compel the suspect to exit the residence,” police said.

Police say when they breached the door to the home, the the man threw a weapon like a mallet, which struck an officer.

A police K-9 was used to make the arrest.

The man, 38-year-old Tyquan Lamar Perry, was taken into custody at 5:36 p.m. and put into an ambulance. Perry, of Virginia Beach, was charged with robbery, use of a caustic agent to cause injury and simple assault on law enforcement.
