CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Chesapeake Police Department responded to a domestic dispute that led to the death of a dog Tuesday morning.

According to officials, officers were notified of a domestic dispute in the 1600 block of Martin Avenue just after 4 a.m.

Officers arrived to the scene to find the family dog shot and killed.

The suspect, 31-year-old Jonathan Richardson, fled the scene before officers arrived, but was taken into custody shortly afterwards.

Richardson was charged with two counts of gross, wanton or reckless care for a child, reckless handling of a firearm, torture of dog causing death and discharge of a firearm in an occupied building.

Richardson is currently being held without bond.
