VIRGINIA BEACH (WAVY) – Gordon Cook can only smile and chuckle a bit when reminded he’s been the head boys’ basketball coach at Tabernacle Baptist Academy for more nearly half a century.
“It seems kind of unreal,” said Cook.
After 45 years, nine state championships, and 813 wins, Cook has decided it’s time to move on, and will retire after his final game on Friday night.
“I know it’s time to walk away, and I don’t have any regrets,” said Cook. “I’ve had a wonderful career.”
His career will not only be defined by the several banners that overlook the gym.
“He’s a foundation guy,” said Dr. Carl Bieber, who first hired Cook back in 1974. “He’s a pilar because of the stability, the natural love of teaching, and then there’s this thing called sports, and he’s a master at that.”
It’s not hard to notice Cook’s competitive drive, whether in the practice gym or on the sideline during a game. But more than teaching his students how to play basketbal, Cook has cared more about the life lessons his players and students will take with them.
“Hopefully I’ve been able to make an impact on lives for the good,” said Cook.
