NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Family and friends honored a 26-year-old woman who was fatally shot last week with a candlelight vigil in Newport News.
Newport News Police say Jocelyn Frazier was killed in the parking lot of a shopping center on Thursday by her ex-boyfriend, 41-year-old Maya Frye.
The pair had been in a relationship and shared a child together.
Several dozen people came together Sunday night, at the same shopping center where she was killed, to honor the life Frazier — a life they say was taken far too soon by a senseless act.
Emotions were high during the vigil, but the message was clear: stop domestic violence.
“She has a good heart, she had a good spirit and she was a mentor to all of us and he took her and he took a baby’s mother, he took a baby mother,” said Frazier’s grandmother.
“I love you Jocelyn and we doing this for you. We will stand strong as a family. Regardless of what happens, we will not be broken,” said Frazier’s aunt.
The man who is charged with killing Frazier had previously been charged with assault and battery against her, according to court records. Her family says there’s no question that domestic violence led to this tragedy.
“You can’t make the excuses, even if it starts with the mental, you have to stop it, you have to get out. Jocelyn is no different from anyone else out here in a relationship, male or female, it should not be happening we should not be burying somebody so young,” said Frazier’s aunt.
“Domestic violence, it has to go. Gun violence got to go. You’ve got to control your community this community rely on y’all man. You’ve got to do something one household at time,” said another person attending the vigil.
