CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Two Atlantic Shores Christian School students are accused of posting a racial slur on social media.
The image, posted on Facebook, shows the slur on two cups of coffee.
The incident apparently happened earlier this month during a class trip to New York City.
School officials called a meeting Tuesday night to discuss it with parents, and the school sent a letter out to parents saying, in part, “the event has resulted in hurt and sadness by all of us in the Shore’s community.”
The full statement from Head of School Gary Carlson reads:
Recently, our school was faced with handling the use of a racial slur by two of our students on social media. This event has resulted in hurt and sadness by all of us in the Shores community.
To bring more clarity to the situation, ASCS administration is calling a “family meeting” tonight for all of our Shores parents. The goal of the meeting will be to address the issue and to provide an opportunity for our parents to gain clarity and to ask questions of the School leadership.
This meeting will occur tonight, March 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the upper school gymnasium. Though we know this is short notice, we believe this matter needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
Please by in prayer that God will use this meeting to provide healing and that His name will be glorified through it.
Sincerely in His Service,
Gary Carlson
Head of School
