ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Deputies with the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office said a body found in the water near the South Branch Onancock Creek was identified as a missing 22-year-old from New Church, Virginia.

Deputies said Miles McIntyre, 22, was last seen at midnight on Sunday walking into the gravel transshipment point between the Onancock Wharf and King Street. Personal belongings of McIntyre were found near the area, resulting in a water search.

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted in search and rescue efforts. A 29-foot response boat from Station Cape Charles and an MH-60 helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City were involved in the search.

By 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, both water and ground search operations were ceased, according to a release.

The following day, around 7:30 a.m., deputies stated that a body was found in the water. The body was later identified as McIntyre and was then transferred to the Norfolk Medical Examiner’s Office in order to determine the cause of death.
